After carefully reviewing feedback from last year’s summer school, the 2017 program is being improved in several ways: we’d like to increase attendance by inviting friends involved in the institute process, invite families from communities of interest, have the program encourage more participation, and we’d like all groups to deepen on the same material.
This Guardian quote reminds us that schools should serve both Baha’is and the wider community:
“… The Institution of the Summer School constitutes a vital and inseparable part of any teaching campaign, and as such ought to be given the full importance it deserves in the teaching plans and activities of the believers. It should be organized in such a way as to attract the attention of the non believers to the cause and thus become an effective medium for teaching. Also it should afford the believers themselves an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the Teachings, through lectures and discussions and by means of close and intense community life.”
– From a letter written on behalf of the Guardian to the National Spiritual assembly of the British Isles, October 17th 1936
The theme this year will be based on the “Hope and the Family” program used at some of the Baha’i permanent schools. However, other materials and themes will also be explored. Ideally entire families will attend this school so they can explore this program about strengthening family connections and reaching out to communities.
The Five Year Plan talks about growing the Faith and service to humanity. Please view this school not simply as a place to learn, but also as an opportunity for service. The school committee needs help identifying both Baha’is and friends to invite to this program. People participating in study circles, devotionals, and other events are especially likely to be receptive. We hope that with your support and encouragement at the local level, we can increase participation and the loving effects of Baha’u’llah’s message. Let us serve together to achieve the goals of the Five Year Plan.
